MLB All-Star Game final score, results: Elias Diaz's eighth-inning homer powers NL to first win since 2012 | Sporting News (2024)

It sure looked like the American League was going to keep its winning streak alive.

The Junior Circuit had won each of the past nine All-Star Games, and after Bo Bichette's sixth inning go-ahead sacrifice fly and a bullpen loaded with dominant arms, it felt like it was just a matter of outs for the American League.

But Rockies catcher Elias Diaz flipped the script, launching an improbable two-run home run off Felix Bautista — who had allowed just three home runs in 42 innings all season — in the top of the eighth inning to give the National League the lead. Josh Hader pitched an efficient eighth, and Craig Kimbrel escaped danger in the bottom of the ninth to pitch the Senior Circuit to its 3-2 win.

That home run sealed not only the win, but Diaz became the first Rockie to win All-Star Game MVP, and just the sixth catcher to claim the honors.

The ninth inning was far from easy for either side. The National League threatened to add more to its advantage against Pablo Lopez. Juan Soto ripped the hardest base hit of the game at 115.4 mph with one out, and with two away, Nick Castellanos singled to give the NL runners on second and first with Diaz back up. But this time, Diaz was set down swinging to end the threat.

The American League then started to threaten NL closer Craig Kimbrel. With two outs, Kyle Tucker took a walk to bring up the hometown Julio Rodriguez up to bat as the winning run. But he, too, showed a patient approach and took a full count walk against Kimbrel to bring up Guardians star Jose Ramirez. However, Kimbrel got Ramirez to chase a high fastball to strand the tying run 180 feet away and snap the NL's skid.

MORE: Who won the All-Star Game MVP?

The scoring started early on both sides. Yandy Diaz kicked off the scoring with a solo home run off Pirates starter Mitch Keller in the second inning to give the AL the lead. However, two innings later, the National League tied the game up on an RBI single from Luis Arraez, who saw two pitches all game and came away with two hits.

After Bichette's sacrifice fly in the top of the sixth, it appeared the NL had struck right back to tie the game when Lourdes Gurriel Jr. launched a deep fly to left that was ruled a home run. But official review took the homer away, and though Gurriel would wind up reaching on a swinging bunt, he'd be stranded in a scoreless top of the seventh before Diaz's game-winning home run an inning later.

The victory by the NL officially cut into the AL's advantage, and brought it down to a 47-43-2 record.

10:43 p.m.:Wild pitch moves Castellanos up to second, though Rutschman made a good effort fielding the ball and nearly getting him trying to move up. Elias Diaz batting now with Castellanos at second and no one away.

10:42 p.m.:Impressive AB by Castellanos to work a nine-pitch walk against Bautista.

10:40 p.m.:The second dominant arm in the Baltimore bullpen makes an appearance as Felix Bautista comes out to face Castellanos to start the top of the eighth.

10:36 p.m. End bottom seventh:Rutschman drills a slider to right, but it's right at Soto for the third out of the frame to strand Ramirez at second.

10:32 p.m.:101.2 mph cutter just above the strike zone, and Rodriguez hacks and misses. Two away.

10:30 p.m.:Kyle Tucker flies out the first pitch he sees to left, bringing up a huge ovation as hometown star Julio Rodriguez comes up to the plate.

10:26 p.m. End top seventh:Pete Alonso comes up empty on a changeup, and the NL strands a pair in the top of the seventh.

10:24 p.m.:Soto pops out for an infield fly and the second out of the frame.

10:24 p.m.:Geraldo Perdomo lays off a pitch just outside to give Soto a chance to bat with runners on first and second, and just one away.

10:20 p.m.:Gurriel does not quite hit this one 395 feet, instead dribbling a pitch just out in front of the catcher. Adley Rutschman's throw to Guerrero at first is low, and Gurriel reaches first.

10:16 p.m.:Fair or foul, that did it for Romano. Michael Lorenzen is coming in to pitch for the AL All-Stars.

10:15 p.m.:That home run call is overturned, and Gurriel is going to have to head back to the plate. Foul ball.

10:12 p.m.:Lourdes Gurriel Jr. got every bit of that Romano slider, and it appeared he kept that fair to hit a 395-foot home run to tie up the game at two. The play is under review.

10:11 p.m.:Blue Jays closer Jordan Romano, newly entered into the game, gets Will Smith to pop out to right to start the top of the seventh.

10:07 p.m. End bottom sixth:Guerrero bounces out to third to end the inning, but the AL has the late lead in this low-scoring matchup.

10:05 p.m. American League scoring play:Bichette lines the first pitch he sees to right deep enough to score Perez from third on the sacrifice fly. That'll give the AL the lead.AL takes a 2-1 lead.

10:02 p.m.:Alexis Diaz comes to pitch, and he gets Whit Merrifield to fly out to right to lead off the frame.

9:59 p.m. End top sixth:Cano gets Albies to ground out to second as the AL gets out of trouble.

9:58 p.m.:All of a sudden, the NL has some renewed life. Riley grounds a base hit through the right side of the infield with Soler running on the 3-2 count, and now the NL has runners on the corners for Ozzie Albies with two outs.

9:55 p.m.:Looked like Cano should have gotten out of the inning, but Vladimir Guerrero Jr. flips a throw too high for Cano on a grounder, and Jorge Soler reaches first.

9:53 p.m.:Back-to-back strikeouts on filthy changeups as another one with biting drop to it gets Nick Castellanos swinging.

9:52 p.m.:Olson is set down swinging at a changeup below the zone to start the sixth.

9:50 p.m.:Standout Orioles setup hurler Yennier Cano in on the mound for the American League.

9:43 p.m. End bottom fifth:Steele gets Heim swinging to strand Hays at second.

9:41 p.m.:Hays likes the first pitch he sees and lines that into center for a base hit.

9:40 p.m.:It's time for Justin Steele to pitch on the mound, and he starts his appearance out by getting Garcia to fly out to Soto in right.

9:37 p.m. End top fifth:Perfect inning for Estevez as he gets Juan Soto, pinch-hitting for Acuna, to ground out to first.

9:35 p.m.:Back-to-back punchouts for Estevez, with Arcia chasing a 97.7 mph four-seamer for the second out.

9:34 p.m.:Changeup gets Carroll swinging to start the inning with a punchout.

9:34 p.m.:Carlos Estevez enters the game on the mound for the AL, and starts by facing Carroll in the rookie's second All-Star Game AB.

9:30 p.m. End bottom fourth:Impressive snag on a hard grounder to first by Freeman, and he steps on the bag to end the inning. That ball was hit 104.2 innings with an xBA of .430.

9:29 p.m.:Bo Bichette, now in at shortstop for the AL, gives one a ride to right, but Acuna has it sized up perfectly in right to make the grab for the out. Diaz stands in with two outs and Ohtani up to third.

9:28 p.m.:Arozarena hacks and misses at a 3-2 fastball from Cobb.

9:27 p.m.:Cobb uncorks a very wild pitch, soaring over the head of Arozarena, and Ohtani moves up to second.

— Flippin' Bats Podcast (@FlippinBatsPod) July 12, 2023

9:21 p.m. End top fourth:Arraez gives a finger wag as he watches the replay to signal he believed he was safe, but, in fact, the call was overturned, and he's ruled out at second to end the frame.

9:20 p.m.:Arraez swipes second, but the American League is going to challenge it. Sure looked close at the base.

9:19 p..m.:Garcia continues to have a hard time seeing the ball out in right, but again makes a great last-second adjustment to leap at the wall and make a catch to rob Sean Murphy of a hit. That ball would have left three ballparks, and left the bat at 101.3 with an xBA of .430.

9:18 p.m. National League scoring play:Arraez just hits. He again sees a first-pitch fastball and again slaps it into the outfield for a hit, this one to right to drive home Martinez and even up the game at one.NL ties the game at 1-1.

9:17 p.m.:Arenado hits it hard, but right at Jung at third, who fields it, looks Martinez back to second and throws him out.

9:15 p.m.:Great start to the All-Star Game for Martinez, as he picks up his second hit of the day, lining a double into the left-field corner to pick up a double.

9:14 p.m.:The stadium is buzzing now as Mariner George Kirby is on the mound now for the American League All-Stars.

9:08 p.m.:Josh Jung pops out to center to leadoff the bottom of the third.

9:06 p.m.:Josiah Gray comes out as the new pitcher for the National League.

9:02 p.m. End top third:Betts chases the slider down and away for the third out. NL still held off the scoreboard.

9:01 p.m.:Great eye by Freeman earns him a walk on a fastball just above the strike zone on a full count. Betts up with two outs and Freeman on first.

8:59 p.m.:Curveball gets Acuna swinging for the second out. Freeman back up to the plate with two away.

8:57 p.m.:Orlando Arcia bounces a grounder to his counterpart at short, Seager, to get the top of the third started with an out.

8:57 p.m.:Sonny Gray is the new pitcher on the mound for the American League.

8:53 p.m. End bottom second:Austin Hays rolls a grounder to second for the third out as Keller allows only the solo home run, and sets down each of the remaining batters.

8:50 p.m.:Mitch Keller's start to the bottom of the second is pretty easy as Corey Seager hits a hard liner to Arenado for the first out.

8:46 p.m. End top second:Carroll hits a hard grounder to the right side, but it's a groundout to end the inning. Had an xBA of .420. National League has had some hard-luck outs so far.

8:45 p.m.:Murphy is caught looking at strike three. But the All-Star Game now has a battle of mic'd up players, with Corbin Carroll facing Eovaldi.

8:43 p.m.:Arraez likes the first pitch he sees and lines a base hit into center. Just impossible to strike out.

8:42 p.m.:Arenado is jammed and pops it up to Semien on the infield for the first out. Now Eovaldi has to deal with Luis Arraez.

8:39 p.m.:Martinez lines a base hit into left, 92.2 mph off the bat.

8:38 p.m.:Cole did his part. Now it's Nathan Eovaldi's inning in the top of the second as he starts facing J.D. Martinez.

8:35 p.m. End bottom first:But just as quickly as he reaches base, he's thrown out trying to steal second on a missile throw from Sean Murphy behind the plate.

8:34 p.m.:Rob a hit in the first, and then line a single to left in the bottom half. Freeman, whose hit was robbed by Arozarena, tells him at first: "You can't take hits away and get hits. You've got to pick one. That's not fair."

"Everything's okay, he says he's sorry... OH AND HE'S RUNNING" 🤣

8:32 p.m.:Filthy knuckle curve down-and-in by Zac Gallen gets Shohei Ohtani chasing for strike three.

8:30 p.m.:Marcus Semien hits a grounder over to Nolan Arenado at third, who handles it for the easy out to start the bottom half of the inning.

8:27 p.m. End top first:Mookie Betts grounds out to second, and Cole dodges a few hard-hit balls — everything was hit at least 99.7 mph — to post a 1-2-3 inning.

8:26 p.m.:Absolutely unbelievable start to the All-Star Game. Freddie Freeman hits a hard liner to left, but Randy Arozarena this time makes a stellar catch in left to rob Freeman of a hit. That ball had an xBA of .530, and would have left five parks.

8:25 p.m.:That ball had an expected batting average of .570, and had Cole been pitching in Yankee Stadium, that would have been a home run.

8:24 p.m.:An All-Star play to start the All-Star Game. Acuna gives the second pitch he sees a ride out to right, but Adolis Garcia, battling the sun, makes a leaping catch against the wall to secure the first out.
