KDE Plasma 6.1 Beta released with Wayland Explicit Sync support (2024)

Time for testing, especially for those of you with an NVIDIA GPU as the KDE Plasma 6.1 Beta is now live with some new features. Currently the roadmap shows that KDE Plasma 6.1 will be released as stable on June 18th. So you have a good while to report any unexpected issues from testing.

Here's all the main stuff that's new:

  • Triple buffering in KWin for smoother rendering and animations
  • Support for the Wayland Explicit Sync protocol, which should improve life for NVIDIA users in particular
  • Support for the Input Capture portal
  • Remote Desktop system integration to allow RDP clients to connect to Plasma desktops, plus a new page in System Settings for configuring this
  • New UX for Plasma's edit mode to make its modality more obvious and visually fancier
  • Added a configurable edge barrier between screens, to make it easier to hit UI elements touching the edges between screens. This also allows auto-hide panels on edges between screens to work properly
  • Fake session restore on Wayland that at least re-opens apps that were open last time, even if they don't get positioned in the same place. Support for real session restore is still being worked on
  • Support for syncing the color of your keyboard's RGB backlight with Plasma's accent color
  • Support for using the color profile embedded into the display, for displays that bundle these
  • Support in Discover for replacing end-of-support Flatpak apps with their replacements
  • Support for the battery conservation mode features on many Lenovo IdeaPad and Legion laptops
  • Support for passwordless screen locking, for using it as a screensaver in an environment without security concerns
  • You can now middle-click the Power & Battery widget to block and unblock automatic sleep and screen locking, and scroll over it to switch the active power profile
  • Slightly rounder corners, and more consistency between corner radius everywhere
  • Better window layout algorithm for Overview
  • The "Shake cursor to find it" effect has been enabled by default
  • New off-by-default effect to hide the mouse pointer after a period of inactivity
  • System Settings Keyboard page has been rewritten in QML

What actually does the input capture portal actually consist of? Does this mean global keybinds for discord (not via xwayland) will work? Or is this just the groundwork for that? Or is this completely unrelated.

When Kubuntu finally adopts KDE Plasma 6.x, that's when I'm switching from Linux Mint.

Right now, I'm leaning towards staying on Kubuntu LTS. I recall hearing that the Kubuntu Team will be backporting a version of Plasma 6 to 24.04 sometime around the end of this year. If so, I may get to try Plasma 6 without needing to upgrade to 24.10. We'll see what happens, I guess.

Need better HDR support (for nvidia at least) and DLSS Frame Generation (again from NVIDIA).

Then I can turn off this win10 VM and run some stuff via proton. I don't know when those 2 things will happen, nvidia has hinted at making it so but time will tell.

            From the merge request:

QuoteThis is the backend that will be used by the portal to enable
the functionality of the input capture portal.
When the cursor tries to move out of the workarea across a barrier
that the portal registered all input events are filtered out
            and forwarded via eis.
Test plan: use together with xdg-desktop-portal-kde!283 (merged) and try with input-leap

So as you guessed it is unrelated to global keybinds. This portal is usefulfull for software KVM like input-leap

I don't know whether Plasma 6 is really ready for prime time yet. I've been using it on both Arch and OpenSUSE TW for a couple of months now and it seems to have issues with remembering window positions and sizes. I had to add a window rule to maximize Konsole despite having 'remember window size' checked in the settings, for example.

I disabled floating mode as if you lock the account and come back you will find the floating bar is always floating now and your firefox is behind it. Other than some minor issues, kde6 is doing well. Well done team.

Quoting: TheRiddickThen I can turn off this win10 VM

I used to tinker and try to make HDR work on Linux, when I finally got it, I realised I only have a handful of games with HDR, it wasn't really a big deal at the end. I don't have Nvidia so no frame gen, but is that also something you use a lot to mainly use a VM over Proton for it? Not telling you what to do I just find it interesting since like I said I went through a similar thing.
